LOCOMOTIVE RETROFIT

Battery Electric Tender

Introduction

GK0.webp

Alta’s Battery Electric Tender (BET) project is a practical step toward rail decarbonisation. Developed in partnership with Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight operator, the BET integrates battery-electric capability into existing diesel-electric freight locomotives to reduce fuel consumption, capture regenerative energy, and improve operational efficiency.

Rather than replacing entire fleets, the BET introduces electrification as a modular extension, enabling rail operators to begin reducing emissions today while preparing for long-term decarbonisation targets toward 2050.

About Aurizon:
Aurizon (ASX: AZJ) stands as Australia’s largest rail freight operator and a publicly listed entity on the ASX. With a yearly transport capacity exceeding 250 million tonnes of Australian commodities, Aurizon plays a pivotal role in linking miners, agricultural and industrial producers to both domestic and international markets through its expansive national rail and road network. Aurizon manages and operates 5,100 kilometres of track infrastructure, including critical routes like the Tarcoola to Darwin railway, essential for central Australia’s supply chain, and the Central Queensland Coal Network, which boasts 2100 kilometres of electrified corridor facilitating access to renewable energy sources from the Queensland grid.

Alta's Scope of Work

Alta is responsible for the end-to-end design, engineering, and construction of the 2.3MW containerised tender, including integration of its high voltage DC-to-DC converter and delivery for on-track deployment

Technology Snapshot

Outcome & Significance

By enabling existing diesel locomotives to operate in hybrid mode through Alta’s high voltage DC-to-DC converter architecture, the project establishes a practical pathway to emissions reduction without wholesale fleet replacement. This containerised solution will allow for extended haulage capability, regenerative energy capture, and large scale renewable integration into legacy rail assets.
