DL019: Battery Electric Locomotive Retrofit
Introduction
Alta was commissioned to resolve battery, motor, and fire-protection issues on Shanxi Jianlong Steel’s battery-electric shunter conversion project. Drawing on experience from previous retrofit programs, Alta supplied critical electrical systems and engineering support to stabilise performance, improve safety, and bring the locomotive up to operational standard for continuous industrial use.

Technology Snapshot
The locomotive operates with a 700 V battery system delivering up to 1 MW of traction power, ensuring dependable operation under heavy industrial workloads.
Outcome & Significance
Alta’s intervention enabled the locomotive to achieve stable battery performance and reliable traction output, addressing the thermal and safety challenges that limited earlier trials. The project reinforced Alta’s capability to troubleshoot and refine third-party conversions, expanding its role beyond supply to include hands-on technical remediation and system optimisation.
