GK0: Battery Electric Locomotive Retrofit

Baogang Group’s GK0 diesel shunter was converted into a fully battery-electric locomotive as part of the company’s wider decarbonisation strategy. Alta supplied the complete electrical system for the project, providing the power and control components that enabled full electric operation. Although Alta did not lead the overall program, its technology formed the backbone of the locomotive’s performance and reliability.

Alta provided a full suite of electrical systems and supporting components, including:

Technology Snapshot

The locomotive is powered by a 700 V, 960 kWh LFP battery system paired with a 1 MW traction drive, providing the performance required for heavy industrial shunting.

Outcome & Significance

Delivered in partnership with Baogang Group, the GK0 conversion demonstrated how targeted retrofits can modernise industrial fleets without requiring full asset replacement. The project also established a scalable framework for future battery-electric conversions across similar shunting and industrial applications.
